Charles D. Velie papers, 1919-1953.

Velie, an officer (1893-1929) of the Deere and Webber Co. in Minneapolis (Minn.), was president of the Minneapolis Council of the Boy Scouts of America and in 1926 established the Boy Scout Foundation Fund of Minneapolis.

John Deere was born February 7, 1804 in Rutland, Vermont. He apprenticed as a blacksmith. After a move to Grand Detour, Illinois, Deere developed and manufactured the first commercially successful cast-steel plow. By 1855, Deere's factory sold more than 10,000 such plows.
